AMS 800 — The Gold Standard

AMS 800 LG CuffAMS 800

The AMS 800® Urinary Control System is the only artificial urinary sphincter currently on the market. For over 40 years, physicians worldwide have implanted the device in more than 135,000 men as a treatment for stress urinary incontinence due to prostatectomy.

The AMS 800 is an implantable, fluid-filled, solid silicone elastomer device used to treat incontinence caused by reduced outlet resistance in urethra or bladder neck (also known as intrinsic sphincter deficiency). The system simulates normal sphincter function by opening and closing the urethra, under patient control.

The AMS 800 has been shown to be an effective treatment for male stress urinary incontinence.

Features and Benefits

The AMS 800 consists of three components: a cuff, a control pump and a pressure-regulating balloon attached to each other with kink-resistant tubing.

The AMS 800 offers these benefits in helping to restore patients' continence and thus quality of life:

  • Time-Tested — Since 1972, the AMS 800 has been considered the gold standard for urologists treating incontinence due to intrinsic sphincter deficiency (ISD) following prostatectomy.
  • Safe — This surgical technique requires just one or two small incisions.
  • Effective — It is capable of offering most men with ISD the opportunity to achieve continence over time.
  • Long-Lasting — It provides effective lasting continence. 1, 2

Mechanism

AMS 800 Bulbus Urethra PlacementAMS 800 Bulbus Urethra Placement

The cuff of the AMS 800® occludes the urethra, preventing urine from passing.

  • When the patient wants to void, he simply squeezes and releases the control pump until the cuff is empty.
  • This transfers the fluid from the cuff to the pressure regulating balloon. The cuff opens, allowing the urine to flow through the urethra.
  • Within a few minutes after urinating, the fluid automatically flows from the balloon back to the cuff. When the cuff is full, it once again occludes the urethra and the patient is continent.

Clinical information

Long-Term Continence

Clinical studies reveal that the AMS 800® provides effective, long-term control of male urinary incontinence. One study showed the following continence rates at 10 years: 1

  • 92% for men with an AMS 800 placed at the bulbar urethra
  • 84% for men with an AMS 800 placed at the bladder neck

High Patient Satisfaction

In one study, patients reported high levels of satisfaction with the AMS 800 system.2

  • 88% would have the device placed again
  • 85% would recommend the operation to a friend
